Halloween has always been a blend of different concepts: Trick or Treat, Ghouls and Ghosts, Sweet and Scary. At LG Ad Solutions, we used our proprietary Automatic Content Recognition to better understand CTV trends during the year’s spookiest month. Through the use of data, advertisers can apply a data-driven approach to make their CTV strategy a little more sweet and a little less scary, not only in October, but throughout the entire year.
Understanding the (Chocolate vs. Candy) Trends
While consumers all understand the “Treat” parts of “Trick or Treat,” LG Ad Solutions wanted to take a deeper dive into what type of treats are advertised on TV. More specifically, we discovered that TVs in the month of October are 38% more likely to see an ad for chocolate relative to a candy ad and on average, 2.5% of all seen TV ads are for Chocolate or Candy.

For Advertisers: Using LG Ad Solutions’ Automatic Content Recognition, advertisers can understand which TVs have seen your and your competitors’ chocolate and candy ads (or the product/brand of your choice). This allows advertisers to manage frequency among audiences who have already seen their ads, conquest against competitors, and target the unexposed!
Timing the (Spooky) Season
For brands looking to time their advertising efforts against the spooky season, it is essential to know when CTVs are watching Halloween-relevant content.

Unsurprisingly, the number of TVs watching Halloween content spikes on Halloween itself.
However, in 2024, all 6 days before Halloween also had higher TV audiences watching Halloween content relative to the monthly average of October and represented a prime opportunity to connect with audiences.
For Advertisers: With LG Ad Solutions’ Automatic Content Recognition, brands can strategically match advertising efforts relative to trends in what is being watched. While the above example has a spooky focus, advertisers could apply a similar data approach to other opportunities like sports or game shows.
